Moving Tips:
 |
Boxes:
Use sturdy, reinforced cartons. The boxes you get from your
neighborhood supermarket might be free, but they are not nearly as strong or
padded and can't shield your valuables as well from harm in transit.
Pack heavier items in smaller boxes. If it's too heavy to pick up,
repack it. Visit Moving
Supplies to purchase packaging supplies.

 |
Department of Motor Vehicles:
|
The law states that you must notify DMV
within 10 days of changing your address. A "Change of Address"
form can be downloaded from the DMV
website.
 |
Electricity:
|
Notify the utility company one week
before you will need service at your new address. This should give them
enough time to make arrangements for one of their service people to meet you
at your home to light, check and adjust appliances.

Internet Service:
|
For those who are using a dial-up
service, check with the phone company to update the number your computer dials
to connect to your Internet Service Provider. Even a move across town
can change your local number to a long distance call.
 |
Magazines:
|
The United States Post Office will only
forward your mail for sixty days. Update your address with your magazine
subscriptions thirty days prior to moving to avoid delivery interruptions.
 |
Mail:
|
Submit a "Change of Address"
with the post office thirty days prior to moving to avoid interruptions with
your mail delivery service. An on-line form is available at the USPS
website.
 |
Packaging:
Think of EVERYTHING (toilet paper, medication, toothpaste...) you
will need on the first day at your new home. Pack them in a box marked
"Open First" and keep it in a convenient location.
|
 |
Pets:
Before doing anything, kennel your pets. Whether at home or
professionally, it doesn't matter. Pets often become spooked with all
the moving activity and run away. The last thing you want is to lose a
family member.
If traveling, visit Transporting
Your Pet for information about airlines, hotels and traveling with your
pet.

schools in your neighborhood.
