The popular film American Graffiti was based on producer
George Lucas' boyhood experiences in Modesto, where cruising was a teenager's
way of life in the late '50s and early '60s.

The visitor center is open daily (except for major
holidays) between 7:00 AM ~ 7:00 PM.
Directions:
From Hwy 99, head south on Lander Ave (Hwy 165) fours miles.
From Hwy 5, head north through Los Baņos proceeding 35 miles to Hilmar.
| Lucas Plaza Statue
A statue in downtown Modesto commemorates the home town of
"Star Wars" creator George Lucas. The statue, depicting a teenage couple circa 1960 leaning on the hood of a car, pays
homage to the cruising culture idolized in the Lucas film, "American
Graffiti".
Directions:
From Highway 99, take Highway 108 East. Follow it to where Needham
St. turns into Downey Ave. and McHenry Ave. splits into J St. & 17th
St.
